Grey Cat

Sleek and strong as sinew, invincible as the night,
                                     and, like the night,
                                     coming and going
                                     on his own terms; supple
as freedom, taut as truth, and as
grey as the dark clouds which gather to silence the noisy
                                                      sun, he
                                                      will not
be kept, he will not be your cat,
                                     but only his own.

Watch him as, being watched, he disappears into
the newborn night, blameless and unafraid, know that if
you reach to strike he will
press the supple curve of his body taut
around your ankles, and then be gone,
                                     forever, for he will not
be struck, he will not be caught, he will not be your cat,
but only his own: sleek and
strong as sinew, invincible as the night.
